Security Architecture & Volatile Container Sandboxing
A defense-in-depth blueprint: How extract.best guarantees user privacy, prevents data leakage, and mitigates archive exploitation vectors.
1. Architecture Philosophy: 100% In-Browser Client-Side Execution
Traditional online file converters frequently require users to transmit private archives over the internet to remote cloud servers or shared compute pools, creating severe security vulnerabilities, data leakage vectors, and persistent digital trails.
extract.best is architected around an uncompromising, zero-trust standard: your files never leave your device. File extraction and compression operations run 100% locally inside your browser using WebAssembly (WASM) sandboxes and JavaScript workers. No server round-trip occurs, and no file payloads ever touch our servers.
2. Zero Server Uploads & Instant In-Memory Ephemerality
Every extraction and compression task executed on extract.best follows a strictly local lifecycle:
- Local File Reading: Files dropped into the tool are read strictly into local browser TypedArrays (RAM memory buffers) via the browser's native File API.
- WebAssembly Isolation: Decompression of complex archives (ZIP, RAR, 7Z, TAR, GZ, BZ2, XZ, ISO) executes inside an isolated WebAssembly sandbox thread via background Web Workers.
- Zero Remote Footprint: Because files never traverse the network or touch remote disks, there are no databases, no server caches, and no remote data logs.
- Instant Garbage Collection: Once you complete your session or close the tab, the allocated browser memory buffers and Object URLs are immediately revoked and garbage-collected.
3. Zip Slip & Directory Traversal Prevention
One of the most dangerous exploits targeting archive processors is Zip Slip (arbitrary file overwrite via directory traversal). In an unhardened system, an archive containing file names such as ../../../../etc/passwd or ..\\..\\Windows\\System32 can escape the target folder and overwrite sensitive operating system binaries.
extract.best enforces strict canonical path resolution prior to any file write:
if not target_path.startswith(os.path.abspath(sandbox_dir) + os.sep):
raise SecurityException("Path traversal attempt blocked.")
Every member entry is verified to ensure its resolved real path resides strictly within the designated sandbox boundary. Traversal attempts are neutralized immediately.
4. Executable Payload Sanitization & Script Blocking
To protect users downloading extracted archives and prevent server-side execution risks, extract.best applies heuristics against untrusted executables and weaponized script extensions (such as .exe, .bat, .sh, .cmd, and .vbs).
Extracted files are served with restrictive Content-Disposition: attachment headers, neutralizing in-browser execution vectors and ensuring content is treated purely as binary download data.
5. In-Transit Encryption & Client Privacy
All network communication between your browser and our edge servers is secured with TLS 1.3 and HTTPS 256-bit encryption. Eavesdroppers, intermediate proxies, or internet service providers cannot inspect payload contents or archive credentials during transit.
Furthermore, we do not require user account registration, email collection, or identity verification to use extract.best. You extract or compress your files anonymously, download your results, and exit without leaving a trace.
